Ford to cash in on motoring nostalgia with the Capri making a comeback

LONDON - Ford is planning to cash in on the current wave of motoring nostalgia by reviving the car that defined the 1970s, the Ford Capri.

Originally pitched as "the car you always promised yourself", Ford's 21st century model of the Capri will be based on the original Capri Mk I, which first appeared in 1969.

The car became synonymous with pulling women and was driven by celebrities including Sir Jackie Stewart and Sir Cliff Richard. It was also featured on classic television shows such as 'The Professionals' and 'Minder'.

No doubt Ford is hoping that reviving the Capri brand will emulate the success of two other recent revivals -- the Mini and the Volkswagen Beetle. It is also reported that Ford is planning to revive the Cortina.

The Capri was designed to be a British version of the American Mustang. It was a bestseller throughout the 1970s, but the last model, made in 1986, was a limited edition. The new Capri, which is due to be launched in about three years, will be priced at around 拢15,000.
