Footie Chick launches clothing range for younger girls

LONDON - Sports fashion brand Footie Chick is creating a sub-brand called Footie Girl to extend its female footballwear to nine- to 15-year-old girls.

Tammy will be the first store to sell the Footie Girl range, from next month. It is aimed at younger consumers than Footie Chick, which targets style-conscious female football fans in their 20s.

Details of the Footie Girl range were unavailable as Marketing went to press, but it is likely to include the tight T-shirts and tops that characterise Footie Chick, complete with its logo.

In addition, Footie Chick has signed a deal with sports retailer JJB Sports, to sell its clothes and accessories, including a specially designed Euro 2004 range, from March.

JJB will also support a competition run by the brand to find "The UK's best Footie Chick". Activity for the promotion will be based around Euro 2004 and will include in-store marketing at JJB. Prizes include a £3,000 makeover and the chance to become the face of Footie Chick.

Last November's deals with clothing manufacturers VMC and Thumbprint, each worth £5.5m, preceded a move by Footie Chick into mainstream retail.

The brand launched in August 2003 in sports retailers and football club stores.

Thumbprint managing director Damian Hopkins said: "More women than ever are following football and playing the game. We aim to have Footie Chick extensively established across the UK in fashion and sports retail by the 2006 World Cup."

Footie Chick is also set to launch playing kit for women's football teams in the autumn. It hopes to capitalise on the current tendency of female teams to wear men's kit.
