The post has been created as part of Flextech's strategy to expand its interactive offering. It hopes that the enhanced interactivity will improve ratings and help drive advertising revenues.
Gunning, who was a recording artist manager before joining Flextech in 2000 as head of business development, will work alongside the channel controllers to define and deliver interactive strategy.
"I am looking forward to leading the team at such a key point in the industry's development and further expanding the interactivity to enhance our channel programming and add value to our viewers," Gunning said.
Gunning will report directly to Jonathan Webb, director of interactive programming and controller of the Challenge and Trouble cable channels.
According to Webb: "I am delighted that Simon has accepted this brand new role. Simon has played a key part in the development of Flextech's interactive offering and has the perfect skills to take the department forward as we focus on driving advertising revenues."
Flextech is already a major presence in the interactive market, and through its partnership with the BBC it produces the UK-branded channels including UKTV, UK Style and UK Gold.
