Five shake-up continues as head of entertainment quits

LONDON – Head of entertainment at Five, Andrew Newman, is to leave the channel at the end of the month fuelling speculation that he is to join Channel 4.

His departure is the latest in a string of changes at the channel's programming department, triggered when director of programmes Kevin Lygo quit in June.

Lygo left to return to Channel 4 as director of television where he replaced Tim Gardam, who left after five years.

Newman previously worked with Lygo at Channel 4 when he was head of programming at its digital offering E4. He joined Five in August 2001, following Lygo to the station after the latter was made director of programming.

When Lygo left Five he is understood to have signed an agreement to prevent him taking any staff from his former employer with him. However, as Newman's contract at Five is expiring he is expected to be free to return to Channel 4.

Since Lygo announced he was leaving Five, Dan Chambers has been promoted to replace him as director of programmes.

While at Five, Newman is credited with buying and commissioning series including 'Monkey Magic', 'Swag', '99 Things to Do Before You Die' and 'Greatest Magic Tricks in the Universe... Ever'.

Newman's role will be held on a temporary basis by Five controller of youth and music, Sham Sandhu.

According to Chambers: "Andrew is a very talented commissioner who has been responsible for some highly distinctive and creative programming."

Five's management has changed almost beyond recognition since the end of last year when Dawn Airey left to head up Sky Networks. She was replaced by Jane Lighting, former CEO of Telewest's programming arm Flextech.
