Five plans makeover of Tony Martin's 'Bleak House'

LONDON - In a move sure to win it some notoriety in the booming world of property TV programmes, Five has proposed a makeover of the ramshackle house of Tony Martin, who has recently been released from prison for killing a 16-year-old burglar.

Martin has already become a tabloid favourite with interviews and countless pieces retelling his ordeal, as he has become a cause celebre for those who argue that the criminal justice system offers more protection to the guilty than it does to their victims.

The tabloid leader writers have been enraged because one of the burglars is now suing Martin for a six-figure sum. Martin himself is believed to be on his way to becoming a millionaire through newspaper articles, books and even a Granada film about his story.

Five has proposed that its bossy American property guru Ann Maurice revamp Martin's rundown home and turn it into a luxury country pad.

The house has been left virtually untouched as Martin served two-thirds of a five-year prison sentence for manslaughter after he shot 16-year-old Fred Barras dead and wounded another man.

Maurice features in the Five show 'House Doctor', where she visits the houses of people who have failed to sell their properties -- usually for glaring acts of poor taste.
