Five Days returns to BBC for second series

LONDON - The BBC has commissioned a second series of 'Five Days', following the success of the original show in 2007.

Writer Gwyneth Hughes' second instalment will use the same format as the first -- an intricate police investigation playing out over five non-consecutive days.

But the second series, set to air in 2010, will neither follow on from the first, nor will it feature any of the original cast of characters.

Kate Harwood, BBC controller, drama, series & serials, said: "Once again Gwyneth has delivered a tense emotional drama about a rich range of characters which will leave viewers desperate to find out what happens next in a complex story of mystery and moment."

The plot sees an off-duty police officer trying to solve the mystery of two seemingly unconnected events -- an abandoned newborn baby and a suspicious suicide.

The strong cast includes Suranne Jones ('Unforgiven', 'Coronation Street'), David Morrissey ('Red Riding', 'Is Anybody There?'), Anne Reid ('In Love With Barbara', 'Hot Fuzz'), Bernard Hill ('Valkyrie', 'Titanic'), and Hugo Speer ('Bleak House', 'The Full Monty').

Earlier this year the BBC aired a two-part spin-off from 'Five Days' called 'Hunter', in which the show's two detectives Hugh Bonneville and Janet McTeer reprised their roles.

The original series was nominated for Bafta, RTS and Golden Globe awards.
