Five becomes first UK broadcaster to set up legal download service

LONDON - Five has become the first UK broadcaster to set up its own video download shop, with features from its car show 'Fifth Gear' being made available to viewers.

The channel has announced that high-resolution videos of 12 super-car reviews will now be available to download from its , at a cost of £1.50 each.

The show, which is produced by North One Television, is also offering free videos from its website to boost interest among car enthusiasts.

James Kane, technical director at 7 Digital, which has developed the download service, said: "This seemed a logical progression for the television industry in the same way that downloading has transformed the music industry.

"There clearly is a market for this. It is early days and I think people in the industry will be waiting to see how this does before expanding it further but we think the demand is there."

This latest innovation from Five comes as the BBC develops its own download service called Interactive Media Player.

This was trialled last year and allows viewers to watch programmes for a limited time. The right to watch shows is activated once it is broadcast but deactivated a week later.
