Five ancient venues to consider for your next event

If you're after a unique event space with a story to tell, why not consider one of the UK's oldest venues? Choose from famous buildings such as the Tower of London through to castles in the country.

Tower of London

Situated by the River Thames, the Tower of London, which forms part of Historic Royal Palaces’ (HRP) portfolio, is nearly 1,000 years old, and comprises 12 event spaces.

These include The Moat, which can host up to 2,000 guests, meanwhile The White Dinner room is suitable for receptions of up to 250 people and dinners for 80. Those seeking a more intimate affair can opt for Martin Tower, which can accommodate dinner for 12.

Thornbury Castle

Built by Edward Stafford, Duke of Buckingham during Henry VIII’s reign, this South Gloucestershire castle was unoccupied for two centuries before it was restored in the 1850s.

The castle’s dining and function rooms are able to host weddings, functions and black-tie events for up to 66 people, meanwhile The Baron’s Sitting Room space can host 22 guests, making it ideal for smaller parties. The Tudor Hall can accommodate larger events including standing parties and balls. The space has retained its old world charm, and features tapestries, suits of armour and exposed stone-walls.

Middle Temple Hall

Constructed between 1562 and 1573, central London’s Middle Temple Hall is one of the four ancient Inns of Court, and its links with the legal profession continue today. 

The building is comprised of various event spaces, including Middle Temple Hall itself, which can host up to 500 people for a reception, or 300 for a seated dinner from 4pm on weekdays and all day on weekends. The Queens Room is described as ‘the most graceful’ of the event spaces, and is well suited to private dinners of up to 22 people. Middle Temple Hall’s outdoor garden is also available for hire, and can accommodate a marquee for up to 1,000 guests.

Duns Castle

Duns Castle, which is located in the Scottish Borders approximately one-hour’s drive from Edinburgh, was built in the 14th century. A number of the castle’s public rooms can be transformed into meeting rooms of varying sizes.  

The Great Hall space is suitable for dinners of up to 60, where the focus is on local produce and traditional Scottish cuisine, and marquees are available for hire for large-scale functions. Scottish dancers, haggis and other traditional elements are available on request.

The Roman Baths

Situated in the World Heritage city of Bath, The Roman Baths have an approximately 2,000-year history. The baths themselves offer a space that is available for hire for drinks receptions, and guests can choose from another three venues.

The Pump Room is suitable for dinners, parties and receptions, meanwhile The Terrace is a smaller-scale venue designed for dinner and drinks receptions. The Kingston Room and Drawing Room can accommodate private dinners and small meetings.
