First Direct marks 21st anniversary with TV ad

First Direct is rolling out a TV campaign to mark its 21st anniversary and promote the customer service provided by its UK-based call centres.

The HSBC-owned bank introduced itself with TV ads that 'interrupted' broadcasts and claimed to be from 2010.

In the new campaign, created by Story, a classroom scene set in 1989 shows a small girl talking about whales, before a teacher walks in with a newspaper carrying the headline 'First Direct revolutionises banking'.

The ad then cuts to a shot of the child, now an adult, working as a First Direct call-handler.

The ad ends with a voiceover stating that the bank offers 'Just real people chatting, 24/7'.
