Fight to win the US election sees last round of TV ads

NEW YORK - The US Presidential ad campaigns by George W Bush and John Kerry have stepped up a notch in the week before the election as both candidates release ads criticising each other's foreign policies.

Bush slammed Kerry for promoting higher taxes and reckless defence cuts, while Kerry's camp retaliated with an ad attacking Bush for making the country less secure by failing to guard 380 tons of missing explosives in Iraq.

Bush also enlisted the help of David Zucker, the director behind 'Naked Gun' and 'Airplane' to use humour to ward indecisive voters away from Kerry's clutches.

"Club for growth", a $250,000 ad written and directed by Zucker opens with an announcer saying: "There's nothing wrong with making a decision and then changing your mind."

There is a shot of a groom at a wedding, except when it comes to the kiss he grabs the bridesmaid instead of his would-be wife and kisses her instead.

The announcer says: "But if you never commit to what you believe in, who will ever commit to you?"

Viewers then see a picture of Kerry as the announcer who says he has changed his mind on issues such as Iraq, the Patriot Act and $87m for US troops in Iraq.

The US Presidential election takes place on Tuesday November 2, with the candidates running neck and neck in the latest polls.
