Ferrari takes editor's chair at Desmond's Evening Mail

LONDON - Nick Ferrari, the former tabloid journalist and television executive, has been named as the editor of Richard Desmond's new London freesheet the Evening Mail, which is to be launched in March to rival the London Evening Standard.

Ferrari has a background in tabloid journalism, although most recently he moved into radio, currently as the host of the morning show on London talk radio station LBC 97.3FM.

Express Newspapers has refused to comment on Ferrari's appointment or further details of the Evening Mail. However, a leaked dummy copy showed that it was heavily derivative of the existing tabloids it is launching against, Associated Newspapers' freesheet Metro and the 40p Evening Standard.

Ferrari started out as a reporter on the Daily Mirror in 1981 and has worked as a showbusiness reporter on The Sun, before being promoted to edit the Bizarre column.

In 1989, Ferrari continued his work on Rupert Murdoch's media properties, helping to launch the 24-hour Sky News channel. His first role was as editor and, after two years, he was promoted to the post of vice-president of news and programming at Fox TV in New York.

Ferrari returned to the UK three-and-a-half years later to take up the role of director of programmes for the launch of Mirror Group's Live! TV, which was run by his old editor at The Sun, Kelvin MacKenzie, also a childhood friend.
