Facebook's list of top trends in status updates around the world provides a unique insight into the conversations of its 500 million users.
The Facebook Memeology study looked at what terms grew the most in status updates in 2010, compared to the year before.
Global statistics highlight how natural disasters and human triumphs made their mark in peoples consciousness this year.
However, updates suggested that more than anything else, people wanted to spend time with their friends and family.
The fastest-growing trend, 'HMU', was the use of a new digital shorthand for people to ask their friends to hang out.
HMU
According to the social networking site, the term HMU, was rarely used in early 2009, but in May it increased to 20 posts a day. In 2010, it increased rapidly by about 75% each month and, by the end of the summer, it reached 80,000 mentions a day.
World Cup
World Cup was the second most-talked about subject. The start of the matches and the finals attracted the most attention, with 1.5 million and 1.3 million mentions. At key moments during the course of the matches, 50 percent of mentions on Facebook were about them.
Movies
Movies was the third most-talked about subject, with 'Toy Story 3,' 'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse', 'Inception', 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Iron Man 2' being the most-discussed. Facebook found that people were updating their status to report on 'Toy Story 3' as soon as it had finished.
iPad and iPhone 4
Apple’s iPad and iPhone 4 got the fourth-most references on Facebook with more than 25 million mentions, both positive and negative, over the past year.
Haiti
Users shared their concern and news among Facebook following the earthquake in Haiti on 12 January. The following day, the number of users discussing it was at a peak rate of 1,800.
Justin Bieber
Mentions of the 15-year-old pop star surged in 2009, and continued its sharp rate of growth in 2010. His appearance on the 'MTV Video Music Awards' in January attracted the most mentions of the star.
Games on Facebook
Of the games mentioned on Facebook, 'barn raising' was the most-mentioned term in relation to 'FarmVille', which launched in January 2010. 'FrontierVille' has also attracted mentions since it launched in June.
Mineros/Miners
Mentions of "mineros", in relation to the Chiliean mining disaster, saw three bursts of activity. The first one after the mine collapsed, the second after contact was established and finally when the miners were released.
Airplanes
This became a popular mention after the pop song "Airplanes" by B.oB was launched in 2010.
2011
In a similar way to last year, people regularly talked about years in their status updates. These included mentions of big personal events in the coming year, such as 'wedding'. References in 2011 showed a spike on 1 Jan 2010, with people looking forward to the New Year.
