Facebook fatigue sets in as growth slows

LONDON - Facebook's growth slowed this summer, according to one report, suggesting that despite reaching the 300 million members milestone in September, the site's growth may have hit a saturation point in some markets for the time being.

The social network's monthly unique visitors rose 1.7 per cent to 124.5m between to May andSeptember, according to stats from Compete, which are normally slightly skewed towards traffic from US referral sites.

The site launched a stripped down basic version called Lite in August in a bid to enable internet users in countries with slower broadband speeds such as Brazil to sign up while maintaining Facebook's momentum.

By comparison, Facebook piled on traffic between February and May, with unique monthly users increasing 53 per cent to 113,014,638.

Traditionally, internet traffic tails off in the summer months, however, the expected bump in traffic did not occur for Facebook in September as people returned to work.

Twitter also experienced modest growth during the summer months, with monthly unique visitors undergoing only marginal growth, up 2.4 per cent from May figures to 23.5m unique users in September.
