FA to back 'Respect' scheme via ad push

LONDON - The Football Association (FA) is launching a heavyweight campaign to back its 'Respect' initiative, following several high-profile clashes between Barclays Premiership players and officials last season.

FA to back 'Respect' scheme via ad push

The Respect scheme, which encourages players at all levels of the game to show deference to referees, was thrust into the media spotlight last season after two separate clashes with match officials, involving Chelsea's Ashley Cole and Liverpool's Javier Mascherano.

The initiative seeks to warn players that without referees football matches would descend into farce. Each year, 7000 referees drop out of the game across the country, some as a result of abuse both from players and spectators.

The campaign, which is being run in association with the Premier League and Football League will run across full-page ads in national newspapers, such as The Sun and The News of the World.

A viral element stars England head coach Fabio Capello as well as former footballers Les Ferdinand and Gary Mabbutt, and celebrities, including TV presenters Ben Shephard and Mark Chapman and actor Shaun Williamson.

The viral also features one of England's top referees, Howard Webb. The FA will seed the campaign on social networking sites, including YouTube.
