Extras' Merchant to host own show on BBC 6Music

LONDON - Stephen Merchant, co-writer of hit BBC sitcoms 'The Office' and 'Extras' with Ricky Gervais, has been lined up to present his own show on digital radio station BBC 6Music from January 14.

The show will be broadcast on Sundays from 3pm to 5pm.

Merchant said: "When I was a teenager I used to run a mobile disco for weddings and birthdays, so DJing is in my blood.

"The 6 Music show will be all about the music -- I love making people listen to the tunes that excite me -- but obviously if things are not working, I'll just stick on 'C'mon Eileen'."

Merchant is best known for his writing partnership with comedian Gervais, which spawned 'The Office' and 'Extras'.

He has won numerous awards including three Baftas, three British Comedy Awards, a Golden Globe and an Emmy.

Merchant has also previously co-presented a radio show for Xfm in London with Gervais and Karl Pilkington, which morphed into their internationally successful podcasts.

Lesley Douglas, controller of Radio 2 and 6Music, said: "Stephen Merchant is a great talent -- his wit, warmth and love of music makes him a perfect presenter for 6Music.

"I have long admired his work on radio... and, like everyone else, I do, of course, love him in 'The Office' and more recently 'Extras'."
