Bloom and Chegwin pull in 3.5m for Gervais's Extras

LONDON - The first in a new series of the Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant situation comedy 'Extras', broadcast at 9pm last night, pulled in 3.5m viewers and a 16% share of audience according to unofficial overnight figures.

However, this was 1.1m and eight share points down on the first episode of the previous series. The episode took a 24% share of 16- to 34-year-olds.

In the episode, television icon Keith Chegwin played himself as a foul-mouthed bigot, a part originally turned down by Orville's sidekick Keith Harris, and Orlando Bloom played himself a vain actor obsessed with his 'Pirates of the Caribbean' co-star Johnny Depp. 

'Extras' was beaten by the last in the series of ITV1's prison drama 'Bad Girls', also transmitted at 9pm, which attracted a 4.7m audience, or a 22% share of total viewing. The series has averaged 4.4m and a 21% share.

On BBC One, at the same start time 'Aberfan: The Untold Story' attracted 4.1m or a 19% share, 11 share points down on last week's '9/11: The Twin Towers'.

Also at 9pm, the first of Channel 4's two-part crime drama 'Low Winter Sun' averaged 1.4m viewers or a 7% share of the total viewing audience.  

Five programme 'Anne Maurice: Interior Rivalry' recorded the least impressive figures in the 9pm slot, with 1.1m viewers and a 5% share of total audience.
