Paterson, who has worked at CHI for almost five years, will move to the US in February 2011, and will be responsible for overseeing the creative work for clients including McDonald's and Anheuser-Busch.
He will take on a role that has been vacant since February 2008, following the death of the previous incumbent, Paul Tilley.
During his time at CHI, Paterson has created award-winning campaigns including the "Brains" spot for Drench, and the "Marathon" campaign for Argos.
He joined the agency in 2005 from Bartle Bogle Hegarty, where he had worked on the iconic British Airways account.
Previous to that, Paterson had spent 10 years at DDB's London office.
