My Event World - Katy Blanchard

Katy Blanchard, part of the senior management team at Enjoy-Work and responsible for the events programme at workspace Chiswick Park, previously worked at Bite CP and Legoland Windsor. She talked to Event about how pig-herding and extreme sports make an impact on the business community and setting up an event industry appreciation day.

I got into the events industry because I wanted to use my creative and organisational skills, as well as fulfil my interest in every aspect of the entertainment sector. The events industry is exciting as you always have a variety of different projects on the go and you are not desk-bound for the standard 9-5 working day.

I have worked here since November last year. I started my career at event agency Bite CP, followed by a stint organising events at Legoland in Windsor.

I was attracted to this particular role because the events programme is core to 'Enjoy-Work', an innovative approach to managing the working environment which is aimed at promoting employee happiness and boosting productivity. The variety of the events – from extreme sports and pig-herding through to book clubs and beauty treatments – make a real impact in the business community and are really satisfying to organise.

Not many people know that in my early events career, I dressed as a giant peach and toured the UK with a roadshow promoting healthy eating.

The best event I’ve been involved with was a Legoland Star Wars Firework event. It was great fun as well as a fantastic learning opportunity. During the day, we had a Jedi training camp for all of the children to take part in, which culminated in fireworks at the end of the day. Seeing all the light sabres raised in the sky on cue across the whole of the park was such an emotional and amazing feeling. To this day, I still get goosebumps thinking about it.

If I could do it over again I would make sure that if I worked abroad, I would come back fluent in that country’s language.

The one thing I can’t stand is rudeness. There is no excuse not to say please or thank you.

Outside my work I spend my time going to as many live music gigs as possible, exploring the countryside, cooking and dancing.

If money were no object I would go travelling regularly. I’m a bit past using rucksacks and shared rooms in hostels, so I would upgrade and go with suitcases and private rooms instead. I love going to places that are off the beaten track and that are not full of tourists.

If I could switch places with anyone else in the industry it would be Michael Eavis. I think this man is a legend and what he has done for the events and music industry is incredible. He has one of the best jobs on earth – music and events.

If I ruled the event industry I would create an Event Industry Appreciation day. We have so many types of appreciation days so it would be great to create one which would mean that one day a year, everybody in the events industry comes together and gets to celebrate.
