I got into the event industry because I wanted to travel the world.
I have worked here since we established the business in August 2011.
I was attracted to this particular role because as well as developing our incentives and sports business there was also an opportunity for me to fulfil my career ambition to operate incoming DMC services to Manchester and the North West.
Not many people know that I have visited all sixty-one UK horse race courses, which was achieved as part of a charity drive for Children in Need.
My worst experience at an event was being stranded in Finland for more than 24 hours, with 150 agitated England football supporters. This was due to a client falling ill on take-off, resulting in delays and the captain and cabin crew running out of flying hours. Needless to say it was a nightmare.
If there’s one thing I’ve learnt it’s to keep calm and remain honest. There is always a solution.
The best event I’ve been involved in was a recent incentive group, where we hired super yachts and sailed around the coast of Malta. It was so enjoyable we did it again the very next day.
If I could do it all over again I would have a better grounding in IT and technology. I do my bit to keep up, but admit I’m a bit of a technophobe.
The one thing I can’t stand is aggression.
Outside of work I spend my time dining out, watching sport, going to the theatre, tasting wine and worrying about my cholesterol levels.
If money were no object I would ensure all of my family and friends had no financial worries and then travel the world relaxing and watching major sports events.
The one thing I can’t do my job without is my friend and colleague, director of operations Marc Hazelden. We enjoy a very close working relationship.
If I could switch places with anyone else in the industry it would be no one. I wouldn’t want to switch with anybody, as I get to travel to sensational destinations, wonderful hotels, work within sports travel and also promote my favourite city, Manchester, to the world.
If I ruled the event industry I’d ensure the events industry professionals are regarded on the same levels as other professional services and that fees and profit margins are more appropriately proportioned to our unrivalled depth of expertise and experience. And of course I would give everybody a day off.
