My Event World - James Rook

James Rook, managing director of exhibition stand and display supplier Nimlok, took the reins of the company in 2010 having worked in the business for the previous seven years. He talked to Event about why the UK should continue to work hard to be the most desirable location for international events, as well as his journey to head up the business.

I got into the event industry because I was selling specialist printing and the addition of new large format capability unlocked the potential for exhibition displays. I asked to pursue, was backed in doing so, and successfully built up a new division learning about the industry as I went. During this time I met Tim Perutz, the then MD of Nimlok, who is now my chairman. The rest is history.

I have worked here since 2003, initially on the road from an office near Gatwick, then opening our London office in 2006 before relocating to our HQ and production facility in Northamptonshire in 2010.

I was attracted to this particular role because I felt I had the trust and confidence of a team I'd worked alongside for many years combined with the market sensitivity to lead Nimlok in the right future direction.

Not many people know that Nimlok is a UK founded business. We are often mistaken as a US brand because of our sizable presence there, but it all started here.

The best event I've been involved was my wedding. Was this a trick question? - my wife reads Event magazine you know.

If I could do it all over again I would have done it faster and bolder.

The one thing I can't stand is bowls for business cards on stands. It such a lazy and damaging practice that still regrettably lingers.

Outside of work I spend my time with my wife and two daughters enjoying walks, parks and weekends travelling to see friends and family. When it's not work or family I enjoy golf, snowboarding, shooting and sailing.

If money were no object I would sail the world for three years.

If I could switch places with anyone else in the industry it would be one of the many event organiser MDs. It would be interesting to spend some time on the other side of the industry.

If I ruled the event industry I would focus on ensuring the UK remained the most desirable location for international events against increasing pressure from rival countries. We shouldn’t take our strength for granted and must ensure we are competitive, attractive and have the capacity and infrastructure and remove all barriers to new events and audiences.
