I got into the event industry because I studied agriculture at university, but never got much of a chance to use what I learned in my first career as an editor. When this role came up, I thought it was the perfect way to get back into agriculture and work within that industry.
I have worked here since November 2011.
I was attracted to this particular role because it’s such a prominent, well-loved and supported event in our local community. I just really wanted to be a part of it.
Not many people know that I edit wine and drinks books as well as working with The Fife Show. It’s a hectic schedule but somehow I manage to fit it all in.
My worst experience at an event was... I’m not sure whether it qualifies as a worst experience, but managing the process of giving out the trophies at our show is always something of a logistical challenge. Doing it for the first time was an experience I won’t forget.
If there’s one thing I’ve learnt it’s always be prepared, be organised and ahead of yourself.
If I could do it all over again I would go back and work closely with the exiting show secretary before I took over the job. This job was such a steep learning curve. I feel like I could have learned a lot from her.
Outside of work I spend my time trying to find ways to help my two young boys burn off energy. I’m also partial to a glass of wine, because of my professional interest of course.
If money were no object I’d love it if the Fife Show could have a proper office. We all work remotely or in the field, but it would be nice to have a proper base to work from outside the show.
The one thing I can’t do my job without is the right IT support. We use a type of software called ShowBiz from Strident, and it makes all aspects of managing a show much easier. I really don’t know where we’d be without it and we're very thankful to Awards for All Scotland for supporting us with a grant.
If I could switch places with anyone else in the industry it would be... I’ve always quite fancied working on a music event, so perhaps swapping places with someone who works on a big festival would be fun.
If I ruled the event industry I’d find a way to make more hours in the day.
