From 23 September-3 October, the Philharmonia will be celebrating their wider digital work with a takeover of the Royal Festival Hall.
Guests will be able to experience what is being billed as the first virtual reality (VR) production from a UK symphony orchestra. Headsets will be available to pick up and try for free in special booths in the foyer spaces of Royal Festival Hall.
Developed by tech agency Inition, the VR experience will present a 360-degree 3D video and audio performance of the orchestra performing the third movement of Sibelius’ Symphony No. 5.
The Philharmonia will also bring its interactive walk-through installation of Holst’s The Planets - Universe of Sound - to the Clore Ballroom in the same venue. For two weeks from 23 September, the public will be able to step inside another virtual Philharmonia - comprising giant visual displays, touch screens, unconventional projecting surfaces, movement-based interaction and planetarium-style projections.
Guests will be encouraged to participate as musicians, conductors, arrangers and composers.
The plans form part of Southbank Centre’s 2016/17 Classical Music Season, which will also see BBC Radio 3 broadcast live from a pop-up glass studio for two weeks in September.
