Central to the Splatoon Mess Fest was an ink-filled obstacle course inspired by the game, which is compatible with Nintendo’s Wii U console.
The event saw participants, which in the game are referred to as Inklings, transform themselves into squids in order to swim in bright purple or green ink. They then fought their way through their opponents' ink in an enemy ink-run, and went on to test their shooting skills at Inkling target practice.
The teams battled it out in a turf war by covering the play area in as much ink as possible. The battle came to an end only after participants fought it out in the real game on a Wii U.
Celebrities including James Marsden from Anchorman 2: The Legend, and Modern Family’s Nolan Gould took part in the challenges, meanwhile members of the public were encouraged to cheer them on.
Spectators could also play the new game in the Wii U tent, and Splatoon t-shirts were handed out to fans on the day.
Those who couldn’t attend the event could follow the action on Twitter via the hashtag #Splatoon.
The Splatoon game was released last Friday (29 May).
