The bridge was initially sketched out to understand its dimensions, before a team set to work on building the metal frame. Finally, 83,000 used batteries were glued on to the structure.
The activation was 12 metres long and four metres high and featured a working bascule. To counteract the range of rival brands’ used recycled batteries on show, the Energizer logo was branded onto both ends of the model.
It was in situ at Potters Fields Park until 4pm, before its batteries were sent off for recycling.
The brand recruited The Gadget Show’s Pollyanna Woodward to front the stunt, which was designed to celebrate the launch of Energizer’s EcoAdvanced battery. The recycled elements of the structure represented the new product’s sustainable credentials.
Woodward said: "As a tech geek I am truly in awe of what Energizer has achieved. It has re-imagined Tower Bridge into a battery-powered sculpture, turning waste into wonderful – just like the Energizer EcoAdvanced battery does, by turning part of old batteries into brand new ones."
