Event TV: Dragon lands by Caerphilly Castle for new Wales campaign

A giant smoke-breathing dragon has landed on the banks of Caerphilly Castle to mark the launch of the Welsh Government-backed Historic Adventures campaign, led by environment service Cadw.

The stunt has been designed to promote the new intitiative, which aims to bring visitors never-seen-before events and experiences at various Welsh sites during Visit Wales’s Year of Adventure.

The four-metre long mythical creature landed by the castle on St David’s Day yesterday (1 March). It features black and red scales, smoke-flaring nostrils and an outreached claw, which passers-by can step into for a unique photo opportunity.

Those that take the best pictures of ‘being captured’ by the dragon and post them to Facebook or Twitter with the hashtag #HistoricAdventures will be in with a chance to win one of ten Cadw Explorer Passes.

The dragon was created by Cardiff-based prop design specialists Wild Creations, who also devised the and . Made of fibreglass, the installation weighs one tonne and took a team of 15 six weeks to construct.

Visitors to Caerphilly will be able to see the dragon for free until Sunday (6 March). It will then move inside the castle, where it will remain until the summer.

Ken Skates, deputy minister for culture, sport and tourism at the Welsh Government, said: "We’re always looking at new and exciting ways to bring Wales’s historic monuments to life for visitors to explore and enjoy, and we’re confident that this creative programme of events will attract a wide-range of visitors to experience Cadw sites.

"Dragons feature in many of Wales’s great myths and legends and it is stories like these that make our country’s heritage so unique. We hope that the arrival of the dragon at Caerphilly Castle will ignite people’s interest in Welsh history and inspire them to have their own Historic Adventures during the Year of Adventure."
