Evening Standard arrests decline in March ABC figures

LONDON - The Evening Standard arrested its decline in the ABC figures for March, rising 0.2% on February to 266,575 in an otherwise uneventful month in the London market.

Despite this, the six-month average for the title still contains a dramatic 18.3% year-on-year drop to 270,729 copies.

In the battle of the London afternoon freesheets, News International's thelondonpaper retained pole position, distributing 502,158 papers, equating to 1.63% more copies than February.

In comparison, its rival Associated's London Lite's number of copies handed out by distributors fell on February, down 0.14% to 400,212 copies.

The granddaddy of London-based freesheets, Associated's Metro climbed 0.8% to 547,180 copies distributed from bins located in the capital's Underground and train stations.

In the financial freesheet sector, City AM recorded a 2% rise in circulation to 97,032.

According to City AM, the new figure shows a 27.5% year-on-year increase since March 2006 when circulation stood at 76,094.

Jens Torpe, chief executive of City AM, said: "This is a great figure which brings us ever closer to the 100,000 reader mark, a figure we expect to reach in the coming days.

"Over the past 12 months we have continued to record solid growth in our readership, expanded our distribution network and delivered a key high quality audience to our advertisers. We are confident that this will continue."

Last week, News International secured exclusive rights to distribute thelondonpaper in Canary Wharf.
