Euro 2004 boosts June revenues for TalkSPORT by 87%

LONDON - TalkSPORT has reported a rise in revenues in June of 87% as the radio station reaped the benefits of Euro 2004, contributing to a strong first half of the year for parent company The Wireless Group.

In a statement ahead of the group's annual general meeting this morning, the company said that revenues for local stations were up by 34% for the first half of the year and up by 40% at TalkSPORT.

Kelvin MacKenzie, chairman and chief executive of The Wireless Group, attributed the company's strong start to the wonder that is football.

In a particularly poetic statement he said of the "beautiful game": "It is the last arena in a politically correct environment where we are free, in the office, bar or home, from being booed or sued for expressing our true opinions. This is one of the immense attractions of sport where men and women can cheer on their favourites in all manner of ways without fear of repercussion."

MacKenzie said that there are plans to raise the profile of TalkSPORT with a national marketing campaign in the second half of the year to capitalise on the start of the football season.

In the same statement, former Sun editor MacKenzie said that The Wireless Group is continuing to seek acquisitions following its purchase of Forever Broadcasting in January for £8.1m.
