CHI repitched for the account and will continue to fulfil a strategic planning and creative development role.
Meteorite, an integrated agency with its roots in direct marketing, will work alongside CHI and will be responsible for campaign planning and direct response activity.
The agencies' first task will be to develop and launch material for 2006 and to help transform the image of heritage conservation with a five-year plan.
Dan Wolfe, managing director of English Heritage, said: "The visitor attractions market is becoming increasingly competitive and if English Heritage is going to continue to build on recent growth, our communications not only need to stand out creatively, they need to be born of first-class strategic insight and work hard to drive response every time."
In August, English Heritage appointed corporate identity, design and advertising agency Aqueduct to refresh its brand identity. The body plans to maintain its focus on direct activity, including work to promote its membership scheme.
Earlier this year, English Heritage awarded a three-year contract to Scotland-based Mail Marketing to improve its communications with members. Last year, it appointed Box New Media to handle its digital marketing.
English Heritage is the government's statutory adviser on the historic environment and manages more than 400 historic properties, 115 of which are staffed attractions.
