England's World Cup defeat watched by 19.5 million

A peak of 19.5 million people watched the BBC coverage of England's 4-1 defeat by Germany in the 2010 Fifa World Cup yesterday, according to unofficial overnight figures.

'Match of the Day Live: England v Germany’ had an average of 13.5 million viewers between 2pm and 5.15pm, a 70.4% share of the available audience. The game had an average audience of 17.8 million, an 82% share of the TV-watching audience.

At primetime, ‘Big Brother’ had an audience of 2.5 million on Channel 4 and Channel 4+1, but was beaten by the Argentina-Mexico game and both ITV1 cop drama ‘Lewis’ and BBC Two’s documentary ‘How to build a nuclear sub’.

‘MOTD Live: Argentina v Mexico’ was watched by an average of 6.1 million people between 7pm and 10pm, 28.1% of the TV-watching audience.

‘Lewis’ on ITV had an average audience of 3.4 million between 8pm and 10pm, a 14.6% share of the available audience, and 'How to build a nuclear sub' was watched by 2.6 million viewers, a 10.8% share of the audience.
