The judges credited Empire's strong performance which, in its 20th anniversary and worst financial backdrop in living memory, managed to achieve its most succesful year to-date.
The judges said: "It's been an ambitious year that has paid off editorially. The magazine demonstrates a deep understanding of its community and serves it in a variety of ways, knowing how to create an impact."
Empire's editor Mark Dinning, who moved to the magazine in 2006 after editing Total Film, described the magazine as a "world-class publication".
Stuart Williams, managing director of film and music at Bauer, said he was "delighted" with the recognition and added that the Empire brand had grown on all fronts, including double digit growth in revenues and expansion online under online editor James Dyer.
Last night also saw Tony Elliott's lifestyle and listings magazine Time Out scoop two of the magazine awards, the only publication to win more than one prize.
Time Out's Michael Hodges was awarded Columnist of The Year and the publication won International Consumer Magazine of the Year, at what is regarded as the Oscars of the press industry.
Mark Frith, editor of Time Out, said: "It really was a global effort. When you think that we now have 35 city magazines across the world, you realise how much of a team effort it is."
Marcus Webb, editor of Time Out International, added: "These are exciting times for Time Out internationally and we hope to announce more magazines launching in the near future. We had our international conference last week in Lisbon and it was great to see the enthusiasm felt by everyone to be working for the brand, from Abu Dhabi to Zagreb."
Other awards last night included Editor of The Year (Consumer Magazine) which went to Men's Health editor Morgan Rees. The Natmag Rodale editor became the only person to win the award twice in the five years.
Stuart Macdonald of Ocean Media's Inside Housing won Editor of the Year (Business Media). The judges said Macdonald "tackle[d] the difficult issues of a complex market in a fearless way, producing a really compelling weekly read".
Rachel Cooke of Natmag's Esquire was awarded Writer of The Year (Consumer). The judges said they were particularly impressed by Cooke's originality when interviewing figures such as Tony Blair, Sir Michael Caine and comedian Matt Lucas, noting "her way into articles wasn't the expected route".
Elsewhere, NME.com won Consumer Website of The Year for its "credible, effective 360-degree approach" and its "strong growth and profitability" and was one of two awards scooped by IPC. IPC also trumped Publisher of The Year (Consumer Magazines) which was won by Look's Julie Lavington.
Grazia won Editorial ±±¾©Èü³µpk10 Of The Year for its Go Shopping Neutral campaign in which they joined forces with ‘Queen of Shops' Mary Portas and created a pop-up charity shop in Westfield. The shop received donations from celebrities and raised £113,000 in the three weeks it was open.
