Emap's Mixmag undergoes new look to attract clubbers

LONDON – Emap's clubbing magazine Mixmag is undergoing a major redesign following extensive reader research, boasting a cleaner and more stylish image as well as new sections and revamped favourites.

The revamp, led by editorial director Pauline Haldane, has been designed to bring a "cooler" feel to reflect the 18-24 fashion-conscious clubbers that Mixmag is trying to attract. Paul Kurjeza has led the Mixmag art team on the redesign.

New sections include VIP and Top Gear. VIP aims to be a "high-octane" opening station that trawls through clubland's hottest events, people, places, DJ sets, tunes and new faces. This month covers Naomi Campbell "wigging out" with P Diddy and Erick Morillo in Miami, the dancing that has been banned in Indonesia and the latest news on Fatboy Slim's Brighton fiasco.

Top Gear details everything to spend cash on when not clubbing, such as clothes, DJ kit, games and gadgets, which have all been reviewed by DJs and clubbers.

Existing sections such as The Weekend Starts Here and Tunes, which reviews the hottest albums and tunes of the month, have been revamped. The new look kicks off with the June issue, on sale from Thursday.

Haldane said: "With the new Mixmag we've created a world where DJs and clubbers rub together and exchange creative juices in a glamorous sexy environment. As a result, all–new Mixmag has closed the gap between the reader, the club nights and the clubs that people shell out for."

Dance music magazines have been waning in popularity over recent years, partly due to the resurgence of guitar-led music. Mojo was the top performer in the latest ABCs and Q is still the market leader, proving that the market is currently being kept buoyant by older fans wanting to read about the likes of Bob Dylan, Jimmy Hendrix and The Rolling Stones.

Mixmag was down 16.5% year on year to 50,182 in the latest ABCs. Last year, rival dance magazine Muzik, published by IPC, closed due to reporting a monthly circulation of less than 40,000.
