EasyJet posts increase in internet sales

Budget airline easyJet posted internet sales of almost 91 per cent in March.

The figure was revealed in financial results for the six months to 31 March, and compares favourably with average internet sales of 86.5 per cent for the same period last year.

The firm achieved a pre-tax profit of £1 million, compared with a £10.3m loss in the equivalent period last year. Revenues were up 36 per cent to £194m, compared with £143m last year. Passenger numbers were up 36 per cent, to 4.3 million.

EasyJet, which is in advanced negotiations to buy rival budget airline Go, includes sales that are initially made over the web but subsequently altered via telephone in its figures.

A spokeswoman for the airline said: "The internet is crucial to easyJet's business model. It strips out loads of costs, as does the fact that we don't deal with travel agents. Sales can only be made by phone within one month of flying."

If easyJet successfully completes the deal, the spokeswoman added that it will roll out its internet business model to Go (www.go-fly.com) as well.

EasyJet is also currently attempting to acquire British Airways' German subsidiary, Deutsche BA.
