Paul Simmons, UK general manager, said the ‘Head in the sand' campaign highlights that the authorities are risking future job losses by not taking up the issue of costs with Luton Airport owner, Abertis.

In an open letter to Luton Council, easyJet chief executive Andy Harrison said: ‘Luton airport should be growing not shrinking. The council cannot escape its responsibility to make the airport competitive. The council own the airport, the council take more than half of the airport charges paid by easyJet.'

The budget carrier had reduced its number of flights from Luton by 14% and plans to reduce it by a further 20%.
