Dutch victory over Italy pulls in 5.6m viewers for ITV1

LONDON - The Netherlands' unexpected 3-0 win over the world champions Italy drew 5.6m viewers to ITV1's live coverage last night, according to unofficial overnight figures.

The match has been labelled the true start of Euro 2008 by commentators, given the exciting standard of the game and possibly the goal of the tournament. It attracted a 27.1% share of the audience for ITV1 between 7.30pm-10pm.

It was also the most watched match of Euro 2008 since the tournament began on Saturday, eclipsing the 4.5m viewers who tuned in to watch Germany's 2-0 win over Poland on BBC One on Sunday.

Earlier in the evening, BBC One's live coverage of a dull goalless stalemate between Romania and France brought 3m viewers and a 22.4% share between 4.45pm-7pm.

The second episode of Channel 4's 'The Victorian Sex Explorer', in which actor Rupert Everett presented a travelogue of a journey around Egypt and India, pulled in 1.6m viewers and a 7.5% share between 9pm-10pm. Channel 4+1's ratings were 93,000 viewers and a 0.4% share.

The broadcaster's latest instalment of 'Big Brother' earned 3.3m viewers and a 19% share between 9pm-10pm, up from 3.2m on Sunday evening. The ratings for its outing on Channel 4+1 were 143,000 viewers and a 1.6% share.
