According to the brand, the event was reportedly the first time a fast-moving consumer goods brand has broadcast an event live with the service.
The debate was advertised online via a promoted post on Google+ and took advantage of the Google Display Network, which let online viewers watch the event in real-time as a display advert. Google+ users posted their thoughts on the debate as it it took place online.
Speakers at the debate included Olympian Rebecca Adlington, Mumsnet founder Carrie Longton and research psychologist Dr Phillipa Diedrichs, all of whom spoke about how social media can affect women’s self-esteem.
The broadcast was part of Dove’s ‘campaign for real beauty’ activity and Selfridge’s ‘the beauty project’. Other events taking place include a Dove pop-up shop and a self-esteem workshop for mothers and daughters.
Nikki Rettie, senior brand manager for Dove, said: "As a brand first, it’s huge news for us and we feel confident that by exposing the debate in this way and making it so widely available, it will bring us a step closer to our goal - making beauty a source of confidence not anxiety."
