DoubleClick acquires remainder of Abacus UK from Claritas

LONDON - Online advertising network DoubleClick is to acquire the remaining 50% of Abacus Direct Europe from Claritas for an undisclosed sum, completing the controversial takeover of the direct marketing company begun in 1999.

DoubleClick sparked a data protection row when it paid $1bn (拢650m) for Abacus's US operation in June 1999.

The company faced allegations of breaching online privacy laws because the merger allows it to potentially combine information on online user habits with offline data such as names and addresses.

However, the deal was cleared by the US government agency the Federal Trade Commission.

DoubleClick said it wants to expand Abacus UK into other parts of Europe.

Brian Rainey, president of Abacus, said in a statement: "The Abacus business model has been very successful in the US and the UK, and we look forward to expanding this model into additional countries."

Abacus UK launched in November 1998 and has data on 250m transactions from 26m households, which includes income, lifestage and lifestyle information for every UK adult.

Chris Morris, who has overseen the growth of the UK business for the last three years, will continue in his current role as managing director for Abacus Direct Europe.
