The Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday are currently printed in Surrey Quays, South London, which has been open since 1989.

DMGT said the move would take three and a half years, at which time the Surrey Quays facility would close.

DMGT is understood to be consulting the 157 employees working at the facility ahead of the proposed move. It is thought they will be offered the chance to relocate.

The statement does not go into detail about DMGT's decision, or the reasons behind it, except to say it will allow the group to produce its newspapers "more efficiently" and will "deliver significant savings".

DMGT said its investment in the plant "would be in the region of £45m to £50m over four years". It said this equated to an incremental spend of only £30m to £35m more than the amount it would have spent at the Surrey Quays facility.

, which publishes the Daily Express and Daily Star newspaper titles and OK! magazine, moves its print works out of Westferrry in East London to Luton.
