Disney Channel's film promotion targets schools

LONDON - A viral campaign to promote the Disney Channel's pre-teen 'High School Musical' movie launches this week, as part of a two-month campaign targeting children at school.

The work includes a dance game featuring characters from the movie with a "send-to-a-friend/beat-my-score" element, promoted on external websites before being housed on the .

Retail partnerships and sponsorship deals are also planned, and an educational CD-rom including songs and dances from the film and a school year-book template has been distributed to teachers in 12,000 schools.

Preview screenings of the film, which premieres on September 10, have gone ahead in selected schools earlier in July.

The film tells the story of a basketball player and academic girl student who share a passion for singing, much to the derision of their peers.

Rob Gilby, Disney Channel vice-president and managing director, said: "We're delighted with the phenomenon this film has become in the States and are predicting the same reaction from our UK audience. The storyline, music and cast have a magic ingredient which kids love and I can't wait to see their reaction when the film launches."

'High School Musical' has been a hit in the US since its release in January. Nominated for an Emmy Award, the soundtrack twice peaked at number one on the Billboard album chart.

There are also plans for a full-length UK theatrical stage version. The licence, arranged through Walt Disney's partner Music Theatre International, will be available to schools for student productions.
