Discovery brings Offman to UK after Canadian success

LONDON - The Discovery Channel has appointed its Canadian vice-president of programming Jill Offman to the role of senior vice-president and channel director for Discovery Channel UK.

Offman will oversee all programme commissions for the channel and will have full responsibility for the growth, marketing and promotion for all four channels. She will also oversee its three factual spin-offs -- Discover Civilisation, Discovery Science and Discovery Wings.

Offman increased the Canadian Discovery Channel's ratings by 60% during her three-year stint.

In 2003, she spearheaded a "wish-list of programme commissions", which allowed Discovery to outline specific genres of programming it required, enabling worldwide networks including Channel 4, Five and HBO to provide more than 100 hours of content to the broadcaster.

Offman, who takes up her new role in January 2005, will report directly to Discovery Network Europe's vice-president and general manager of the UK, David Abraham.
