Ding: the smart doorbell success story from John Lewis' accelerator scheme

The doorbell you can answer from anywhere in the world began life in John Lewis' accelerator scheme for start-ups, JLAB. ±±¾©Èü³µpk10 caught up with co-founders Avril O'Neil and John Nussey at Ding Lab's office in Somerset House's Makerversity.

Ding Labs, which participated in the third edition of John Lewis’ accelerator programme have achieved $106,888 of a $50,000 target on Kickstarter with nine days still to go.

JLAB selects five tech start-ups each year to work in John Lewis’ head office for 10 weeks over the summer. During that time they receive mentoring and are introduced to key members of staff.

They are also eligible to receive funding of up to £100,000 from the retailer and its partner on the programme, corporate innovation specialist and technology investment fund L Marks.

Avril O’Neil, Ding Lab’s co-founder, told ±±¾©Èü³µpk10: "The thing that was really beneficial about working with John Lewis was... thinking about exactly how the product might be framed in a retail context."

"We'd always planned to launch on Kickstarter. We saw [JLAB] as a really good way to test the product, target exactly who we thought our audience was, and then learn alot about our audience as well."
