Digital UK appoints Gekko to aid digital TV switchover

LONDON - Digital UK, the company coordinating the UK's switchover to digital television, has appointed field marketing agency Gekko to handle its in-store information and training programmes.

Gekko, which handled the field marketing campaign for Navman's GPS in-car navigation, will provide Digital UK with specialist training for installers and retailers of digital components, and answer customer queries about the switch from analogue to digital, which the government wishes to complete by 2012.

Digital UK, which formed in September 2005 as an independent not-for-profit organisation to assist the crossover to digital TV, chose Gekko to provide logistical help for the transition from analogue because of its previous experience handling accounts with Toshiba and Freeview.

Daniel Todaro, managing director of Gekko, said: "The switch to digital is the most significant advancement in TV since the advent of colour.

"Ensuring all parties, including retailers and installers, are adequately trained and informed of their responsibilities in the lead up to switchover is a huge responsibility."

The process, which begins in 2008, will make every UK TV network cross over to digital region by region, beginning with Border and ending with London, Meridian, Tyne & Tees and Ulster in 2012.

Digital UK's chief responsibilities include coordinating the technical rollout of digital terrestrial TV across the UK, liaising with TV equipment retailers and manufacturers, and providing information for the general public about the digital switchover.

Ian Adams, head of business development at Digital UK said: "Switchover is a huge logistical undertaking that affects every television home in the UK.

"Gekko's proven ability to deliver field marketing for the technology sector will ensure that we utilise all key channels to the consumer, and help make the transition to digital a success."

The UK currently has a digital penetration of 66%, with proponents of the technology saying it will allow viewers to access more TV channels, create a greater scope for HDTV and make the country a world leader in broadcasting.

Digital UK, which is chaired by Ford Ennals and Barry Cox, was set up at the government's request in recognition of the industry needing cross-industry assistance for the digital switch.
