Digital switchover to start in October with BBC Two first to go

LONDON - Analogue TV switch off will begin on October 17 in Whitehaven, with Digital UK running a locally targeted campaign and tying in a national campaign to the countdown.

BBC Two will stop broadcasting in analogue in the area on that day, followed on November 14 by the remaining analogue channels.

At that point, every home in the area will be able to receive at least 18 Freeview channels, including ITV2, E4 and BBC Four, plus digital radio, via an aerial.

Digital UK has today launched a range of measures to help Whitehaven's 25,000 households make and understand their upcoming switch to digital-only signals.

Letters are being sent to every household explaining the Digital Switchover Help Scheme, which will provide digital television equipment and installation to those aged 75 and over and those with particular disabilities.

Digital UK is also working with local charities and volunteers, led by Age Concern, to provide practical assistance to those who fall outside the scheme.

There will also be another burst of the wider campaign preparing the country for the 2008-2012 switchover process. This includes new TV and radio trails and a school scheme providing primary teachers with a range of switchover-themed materials linked to the national curriculum.

Digital UK has already commenced a sponsorship of Channel 4's 'Countdown' to amplify its message.
