Digital & Direct: Gap to debut online store

Fashion retailer Gap is to launch its first UK ecommerce site this year, as the pressure on retailers to use the internet more effectively intensifies.

Gap has stood out as one of the few high-street chains not to have an online store.

Gavin Ailes, deputy managing director of agency The Search Works, said: 'People are realising ecommerce is necessary and are having to play catch-up.'

Elsewhere, Google's industry leader for retail, Peter Fitzgerald, said many retailers were unable to deal with the high levels of online demand over Christmas. 'They have to take investment in online platforms a little more seriously.'
