Deutsche Post plans entry into business mail market

LONDON – Deutsche Post has confirmed it is meeting Royal Mail within a fortnight with the aim of entering the corporate mail market following on the heels of UK Mail, the Business Post subsidiary, which has struck a similar deal.

Deutsche Post plans entry into business mail market

Deutsche Post UK director Tony Alsop said that assuming meetings with Royal Mail are on the same favourable terms as were offered to Business Post, Deutsche Post could launch by the first quarter of 2005 or even later this year.

"What information we have looks positive and encouraging," Alsop said.

Deutsche Post, which owns carrier firm DHL, aims to capture up to 5% of the £5bn business market within three to five years.

The UK Mail deal last week was dubbed as the first of its kind in Europe, breaking up Royal Mail's 300-year monopoly. Under the arrangement, the company pays Royal Mail 13p per letter to deliver mail to business customers.

Royal Mail's Dutch rival TPG is also rumoured to be hatching plans to build its own UK postal networks by 2007.
