Baker, 48, announced he was going on an extended vacation after picking up the Best Radio DJ gong at the Sony Radio Academy Awards last night.
A BBC spokeswoman confirmed the news today: "After three years at London Live, Danny is taking an extended vacation but will be returning to the corporation," she said.
A replacement for his breakfast show has not yet been lined up.
Baker has been at BBC London 94.9 since September 2001 when he revived his 'Ahoyhoy Danny Saturday Show'. In April 2002, he became the weekday breakfast show host.
Previously, he was given Dave Lee Travis's breakfast spot on Radio 1 in 1993 but following a 700,000 slide in listeners a year later, he was shunted to a Saturday morning slot.
As well as a career in radio and TV presenting slots on LWT, TV AM and 'The Big Breakfast', Baker advertised washing detergent brand Daz.
