The news came as the group reported a fall in first-half profits, despite strong advertising revenues at the Evening Standard. Shares were up 12p this morning to 772p.
Last year, DMGT more than tripled spending on its free Metro commuter paper across the country and on online activity, which included the relaunch of Charlottestreet.com as femail.co.uk.
The publisher has seen a sustained climb in circulation during the period, with average Daily Mail sales up 1.2% to 2.4m and average sales of the Mail on Sunday up 1% to 2.34m.
Sales of the Evening Standard fell by 2.5% to 435,000 while the Metro in London increased its circulation to more than 800,000. Loses at Metro were halved year-on-year and the title looks set to break even next year.
The group reported a 1% fall in half-year pre-tax profits to £71.6m on turnover of £960.5m, up from £863.1m last time.
