Richard Desmond's national newspaper has launched an online archive comprising 1.7 million newspaper pages dating back to its launch in 1900.

The service is similar to the one launched by The Times' last year.

The Daily Express service is available at and is charged at £5.95 plus VAT for 48 hours' access.

Users can look at a preview of the page free of charge, but will not be able to access the content in full unless they pay.

The Daily Express said the project, which will be updated daily, has been two years in the making.

The Times online archive, launched in 2008, costs £4.95 for 24-hour access to 200 years of archive.

This year, the Daily Mirror launched MirrorFootball.co.uk, a site that draws on the paper's large photo library, which stretches back to the early 20th Century.
