In her new role, Hutchison will focus on running the APA as an effective promotional vehicle for customer magazines and APA members.
She replaces Hilary Weaver who after five years at the APA is moving to APA's parent organisation, magazine trade body PPA, to take up a new role as director of membership services and communication.
Her new role will focus on maintaining and developing membership of PPA, as well as taking responsibility for all communications aimed at PPA members, event promotion and PR. Weaver will move over to the new role full-time at the beginning of February.
Hutchison worked at Starcom Motive for 18 months. Previously she was involved in the launch of a number of business titles including Sunday Business and has consulted for Associated Newspapers. She has also launched her own customer magazine, Alodis, for self-employed professionals.
APA deputy chairman Grahame Lake said: "A number of new initiatives are in the pipeline and Julia's skills and experience are ideal to take the APA forward."
Starcom Motive said that it was not seeking a replacement at this stage.
