ITV has signed a deal with Tesco, giving the supermarket exclusive distribution of 'Coronation Street - Rogues, Angels, Heroes & Fools - The Album'.
The record has been written by acclaimed musicals writer Trisha Ward and its songs have been written to represent a musical journey through 50 years of ‘Coronation Street’, drawing on characters and events from the series.
Events and themes depicted on the album include the soap’s first-ever episode in ‘Opening episode’, Hilda and Stan’s second honeymoon in ‘Woman Stanley woman’, and a song called ‘Norman Bates with a briefcase’ about serial killer Richard Hillman.
‘It’s too late’, sung by Kathy Kelly, who plays Rovers Return barmaid Becky McDonald, will be released as a single on 6 December.
The score for the album was recorded at London’s Abbey Road Studios.
Kieran Roberts, Coronation Street’s executive producer, said: "When I first heard that award-winning composer Trisha Ward wanted to celebrate 50 years of Coronation Street in music, I was intrigued.
"When I met Trisha and saw how passionate she was about the show and heard the brilliant songs she was writing I very quickly became excited about the idea.
"Two years down the line I’m thrilled this music project has come to fruition in such a wonderful album of original songs – it is without doubt a unique and fitting way to celebrate 50 years of 'Coronation Street'."
The CD will be sold exclusively in Tesco stores. Rob Salter, the supermarket’s director of entertainment, said: "We believe this will be one of our most successful albums this Christmas."
