A team of 15 researchers contacted various comparison sites including Moneysupermarket.com, Gocompare.com and Confused.com for car insurance and home insurance for 180 individual quotes to assess how clear the information for consumers was.
Which? also said most price comparison sites require consumers to specify how much of any claim they would be willing to pay, before the insurer steps in. However, many don't explain that there may be both compulsory and voluntary excesses.
Which? said the sites failed as one-stop-shops, as none consistently gave the cheapest quote. Different websites sometimes gave different quotes for the same insurer. None of the 15 Which? researchers received the same lowest quote across all six sites.
But Confused.com has slammed Which? for making ‘sweeping statements' and choosing ‘to play down the enormous benefits that comparison sites can provide'.
Confused.com said compulsory excesses in order to reduce premiums could be confusing for consumers and it had revamped its site to help consumers make choices.
The consumer organisation suggests people get quotes from several comparison websites before buying.
